Dear friends,

Welcome to the American Prosthodontic Society (APS) website!

It is with tremendous honor and a great sense of responsibility that I serve as the 77th President of the American Prosthodontic Society.  I follow in the footsteps of teachers, clinicians, and researchers, who were instrumental to the advancement of Prosthodontics as we know it today.   This prestigious society has gained renewed interest and has had several changes to its structure and membership.  APS has been placed at the forefront of changes in Prosthodontics due to its acceptance of laboratory dental technologists as full members.

Carlo Ercoli, DDS

Having been educated in Italy, first as a laboratory technician and then as a dentist, I have had the distinct privilege of seeing Prosthodontics from both perspectives.  My training as a prosthodontist in the USA truly crystallized my understanding of the need for closer collaboration between the clinician and the dental technologist.

This year APS will be hosting its 83rd annual scientific session.  The annual scientific session is the highlight for the Society, a program of the highest caliber with speakers and attendees from around the world.  This year will be no exception. Under the leadership of Dr. Izchak Barzilay, the 2011 scientific program, titled “The Digital Dental Office” promises to be a meeting that can’t be missed.  Providing up-to-date dental information, this program will provide you with clear ideas of where the future of Prosthodontic practice is heading.

While print is disappearing from journals and advertisements are becoming more present on paperless media, dentistry is moving towards more technologically-driven approaches. Young graduates only read their assignments on their handheld devices and, probably, in the very near future they will “watch” their assignment rather than read them.  The digital revolution will greatly benefit dentistry, especially Prosthodontics.

As part of this year’s meeting we will have our annual Graduate Prosthodontic Student Competition.  Under the direction of Dr. Steve Sadowsky, this competition has been extremely successful, resulting in outstanding up-to-date presentations.  Additionally, John Ball each year recruits an impressive number of young table clinicians to share their research and clinical skills.  Once again, this activity is being supported by Dentsply, whom we thank for their continued partnership.

Also this year, the APS will recognize the outstanding contributions to dentistry by a laboratory technologist and dentist.  These two awards, the Kenneth Rudd Technologist Award and the Golden Medallion Award are supported by the JPD and the American Prosthodontic Foundation.

I want to personally welcome you to our society and hope to see you at the next annual scientific session, February 24-25, 2011 in Chicago at our new meeting location, the Swissotel.  This new venue will provide much needed space for APS to be able to accommodate its growth. Come grow with us!!  Whether you’re a generalist, specialist, or technologist, you will find a professional “home” in the American Prosthodontic Society, one filled with relevant information for your practice and great camaraderie!!

I look forward to seeing you all in the great city of Chicago, Illinois in February 2011.
